How to Create a new Captive Portal
Captive portals are (typically) how users log into your SputnikNet network. You can have as many captive portals as you want with SputnikNet. Here's how to create them.
Name your portal and apply basic settings.
Portal Name: give your portal a memorable name - the name is not displayed to Wi-Fi users, it is just used in SputnikNet to make it easy to manage multiple portals.
Portal Type: since this is a captive portal, leave the type set to "Captive".
Use (insecure) HTTP: leave unchecked; generally it is better to use HTTPS to display captive portals. That way all login credentials provided are kept encrypted and secure. SputnikNet includes up-to-date security certificates signed by recognized certificate authorities, so there is no issue with browser security warnings. However in some (rare) circumstances you may want to default to HTTP, for example using click-through authentication (where there is no secret user information) applied to an old/slow router serving a busy network.
Welcome Portal: select to display a welcome page after the user authenticates, but before they are redirected to their intended URL or the redirect page you have defined.
Welcome Portal Timeout: set the number of seconds to keep the user on the post-authentication welcome page before they are redirected to their intended URL or the redirect page you have defined.
Session Monitor: select to display the session monitor window, which shows real-time session statistics to the Wi-Fi user (time/bandwidth consumed).
Anonymous Guest Name: enter a name to use to greet the user on the welcome page if the authentication system doesn't capture this information. For example, with a guest authentication the above setting would say something like "Welcome, Coffee Lover" instead of welcoming them as a MAC address or login code (e.g. "Welcome, 00:11:22:33:44:55:66").
Authenticate Text: enter text that will be displayed when you have multiple authentication systems applied to the captive portal.
Click "Add New Portal" to apply the settings to your new captive portal.
